10-Week Life Drawing Course

Life Drawing Methods & Techniques in Pencil and Charcoal

Drawing the human figure from life is perhaps the most challenging subject an artist can face. This 10-week course shows you the classical approach to life drawing, following a manageable step-by-step procedure and slowly unravelling this complex subject matter. It will provide you with a good grounding in the structure and anatomy of the human body, an understanding of how the Old Masters approached the figure, familiarity with working with a live model, and many basic drawing skills, producing a finely rendered figure drawings by the end of the ten weeks.

Our 10-Week Life Drawing Courses with Adrian Cooke will be held at St. Patrick's Gateway Centre, WATERFORD, starting Monday 13 January 2020, and at University College Cork, CORK CITY, starting Tuesday 14 January 2020.

Structure & Anatomy

You will work on gesture studies with the live model, helping you to develop your sense for rhythm, movement and expression, and understanding the effect of gesture. You will also be introduced to perspective and foreshortening using block forms and geometric models in different positions and angles, and different methods of measurement.

Modelling

You will also be shown how to recreate the effect of light and shadow on the model under classical lighting conditions, creating tone and tonal progressions. Handling your materials to get the best results - line work, shading, textures, light and shadow.

About Adrian Cooke

Drawing Instructor

Coming from a rigorous formal training in classical music - piano and music composition - Adrian is a largely self-taught visual artist. He has selected areas of study and interest, such as the classical atelier method, to inform the style and ethos of his work. He works predominantly in traditional drawing and painting media, regarding these fundamental skills and techniques as essential building blocks in his work. His style, however, would be better described as Abstract Realism. His first exhibition was a series of classical portraits and master copy drawings at 33 The Mall, Waterford, in 2014.
