Workshop with Thomas Langeveld and Cultural Experience

Workshop
Rembrandt van Rijn, Self-Portrait (1660)

You will be given a selection of paintings to choose to copy from, which consist of self-portraits painted by Rembrandt during his later years. You will work from a high-quality reproduction, painting on a small scale (around 40x50cm to 50x70cm maximum). You will begin by tracing the initial drawing in charcoal during the first session, rather than attempting to draw freehand. This will allow for sufficient time to explore the painting process.

Over the course of the workshop, you will explore an indirect painting approach, beginning first with a grisaille underpainting. There will be an emphasis on maintaining accurate proportions, successfully organizing values to depict light and form, and how to employ various brush-handling techniques to recreate Rembrandt's renowned use of thicker impastos and vibrant brushstrokes.

In the final stages of the workshop, students will work in a series of glazes to add in the color indirectly, to achieve luminosity and dynamic contrast between light and dark passages. Thomas will demonstrate every stage of the step-by-step painting process, as well as color mixing, brush-handling, and providing in-depth critiques throughout.

Museum & Gallery Visits
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

The cultural aspect of this workshop exchange includes visits to the Frans Hals Museum and Teylers Museum in Haarlem, as the studio is very nearby, and to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam on the final Saturday. Your visit to the Netherlands will also coincide with the famous Keukenhof festival (21 March - 19 May), one of the world's largest flower gardens.
