Structure & Anatomy

The Head & Facial Features

This course begins by looking at the three-dimensional structure of the head - the biggest form, and explains the importance of identifying the largest planes in which all of the smaller features will be located. The differences between one person's face and another are so minute that learning how to take accurate measuements and accounting for these small changes is critical.

You will learn the basic anatomical structure of each facial feature - the eyes, nose, mouth or lips, and ears - to help you know what to look for when drawing your subject, and to understand how light plays on all of the these smaller forms.

Nothing in a portrait is a matter of indifference. Gesture, grimace, clothing, decor even – all must combine to realise a character. Charles Baudelaire (1821-67)

Likeness & Expression

Capturing Unique Characteristics

Portrait drawing (or painting) is notoriously difficult, and has challenged even the greatest artists throughout history. Our aim, therefore, will be to create a 'good head study' - that is, a realistic and believable study of the sitter. Capturing the essence of the sitter's personality might be beyond the scope of this workshop but by producing a strong study of the head and face, you will have a good starting point from which to develop further.

A portrait is a picture in which there is just a tiny little something not quite right about the mouth. John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)

Basic drawing skills will be demonstrated including measuring, coordinating your hand and eye, and creating different types of line and tone. A clear and logical sequence is followed regardless of the subject matter, and this method will be learned and reinforced in every exercise, so that it becomes automatic.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will have learned:

  • Structure and anatomy of the head and facial features
  • The core principles of drawing – design, line, value and form
  • Drawing techniques such as hatching, shading, and veiling
  • Know how to measure accurately, using comparative measurement and the sight-size method
  • Materials and media, knowing when, how and why to use them
  • How to light your subject to effectively reveal form
