This 5-week course introduces you to the oil painting practices of the 17th-century Dutch Masters, selecting from a variety of genre paintings to copy, including such famous masters as Vermeer, Rembrandt, Steen, and Frans Hals.
Copying master paintings is one of the best ways to improve one’s painting skills, whether you are an established artist or a beginner. This intensive course starts with learning the principles of academic oil painting, and cover topics such as gesture, proportion, and the use of subtle colour.
Dutch 17th-century genre paintings, often referred to as “scenes of everyday life,” encompass an enormous range of subject matter and have enjoyed tremendous popularity. Unassuming yet full of charm, these legendary pictures evoke daily existence during the Netherlands’ Golden Age.
Each class will include many demonstrations, guiding you in detail through the painting process, interaction and discussion about the oil painting method and techniques, and practical exercises which can be submitted by email for individual appraisal.
In order to attain the highest perfection in painting it is necessary to understand the antique, nay, to be so thoroughly possessed of this knowledge that it may diffuse itself everywhere.
– Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)
