This course introduces you to portrait drawing using pencil and charcoal, and is the perfect – if not essential – accompaniment to the portrait painting course. The drawing component of portraiture is the most essential part, covering measurement, proportions, shapes, values, edges and lighting. All of these elements determine the success of the portrait, and yet make no use of colour.

In this course, you will cover all of the technical and aesthetic aspects of portrait drawing, from the structure and anatomy of facial features to achieving likeness and creating expression. You will also be shown many essential drawing techniques and general principles.

You can choose to do just 5 weeks (Part 1) or the full 10 weeks (Parts 1 and 2).

Nothing in a portrait is a matter of indifference. Gesture, grimace, clothing, decor even – all must combine to realise a character.

– Charles Baudelaire (1821-67)

Please note that there will be a break for Christmas halfway through this course. See further details and other important information in the sections below.
