Level: Intermediate / Advanced

Rembrandt van Rijn is considered by many to be perhaps the greatest painter who ever lived. In this intensive 5-week course, aimed at intermediate to advanced painters, we examine in detail Rembrandt’s working materials, methods and techniques, by focusing on and copying one of his self-portrait paintings.

Rembrandt’s style of painting varies from very fine, when he started his art career in Leiden, to a rough manner, in his later years, and his self-portraits chart his development as an artist. Rembrandt constantly searched for new ways to achieve better results instead of sticking to one ready-made formula for painting. This can be said not only about the technical and stylistic parameters of his artworks, but also about his compositions and the way he painted people, light, volume and texture.

The historical and practical information presented in this course is informed by the Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) in the Netherlands, led by Ernst van de Wettering, as well the National Gallery Scientific Department, UK.

This course is ‘must’ for any Rembrandt enthusiasts, or any painters interested in the 17th-century northern European style.

Practise what you know, and it will help to make clear what now you do not know.

– Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69)
